How to Prepare for Your Video Shoot

Writer's picture: Spencer JohnsonSpencer Johnson

We know that being on camera isn’t something most people do every day, so we want to make this process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Below are the most common questions we get leading up to a shoot, along with everything you need to know to feel prepared and confident.

1. Who Should Be Writing the Script for My Video?

You have a few different options here. First, we are more than happy for you to write the script yourself. This allows you to put everything in your own words, and we’ll craft the visuals around that script.

If you’re writing it yourself, we strongly recommend following the StoryBrand and Marketing Made Simple frameworks. These frameworks focus on identifying the problem, solution, and result while also establishing credibility and inspiring action. This is the foundation for all the messaging we create, so we like to stick to it.

However, you don’t have to do it alone. If you need help, that’s part of our pre-production process. We’re happy to write the script for you, and you can tweak the wording to make it feel like your own. That way, we stay within a framework that works while also making sure your message sounds authentic.

2. How Do We Prepare for the Shoot?

The first step in preparing is finalizing the script. That gives us the words we need to communicate visually. But there’s more to preparation than just the words.

At least a week before the shoot (if not earlier), we provide a storyboard. This is a combination of the script and the visuals that will accompany it. We use this to map out things like:

  • Text animations, graphics, or slides that need to be included

  • Brand alignment (Do we need to match this with your website or other marketing materials?)

  • Shot planning (How many shots do we need? Are there drone shots? What are the establishing shots?)

This planning process helps us be as efficient as possible on production day. Once we finalize the storyboard, we share it with you to ensure everything aligns with your vision. This also gives you the chance to provide any additional ideas that should be included.

3. What Should I Wear on Camera?

A few simple guidelines will help you look your best on camera:

  • Avoid patterns like stripes or gingham. These don’t translate well on screen and can cause distortion.

  • Stick to solid colors. They’re easier on the eyes and look better on camera.

  • Wear brand colors. If your brand’s colors are blue and white, consider incorporating those into your outfit.

  • Branded clothing is great. If you have a shirt, jacket, or other clothing with your logo, feel free to wear it.

Most importantly—be yourself. If you normally wear jeans and a T-shirt when meeting clients, wear that (maybe elevated a little). If you’re typically dressed in a suit, then wear a suit. The goal is to look natural and feel comfortable, while still being aligned with your brand.

4. Do I Need to Memorize the Script or Can I Speak Naturally?

We have two approaches when it comes to filming:

  1. Using a Teleprompter – If your script is finalized and needs to be delivered verbatim, we provide a teleprompter. This eliminates the stress of memorization and ensures you stay on message.

  2. Interview-Style Filming – If you’d rather not follow a script word-for-word, we can take an interview approach. This allows you to answer questions naturally, making the video feel more conversational and engaging.

The good news is that AI tools now help us extract key moments from interview responses, so we can easily identify the best quotes and impactful statements from your answers.

5. How Long Until I See the Final Video?

This is a must-ask question during pre-production. The timeline varies depending on factors like:

  • The complexity of the edit

  • The number of videos being created

  • Any additional graphics, animations, or branding elements needed

Some videos take 7 days, while others may take a month to complete. If you’re on a tight deadline, let us know early. If this is a multi-video project, we can schedule releases (e.g., filming all at once and delivering one video per month over six months).

Final Thoughts

By answering these key questions ahead of time, we ensure a smooth and efficient production process. If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to make sure your video is professional, effective, and aligned with your brand.
